Something old, something new

It’s been a busy time for me at the studio, and I’m excited about my new work. Recently, I had photographer extraordinaire Pete Duval take pictures of some of my pieces. Some of the pieces will be familiar if you’ve ever visited my studio, but if you haven’t been there in awhile, you’ll see some changes in my work. And you’ll have to go to National Airport to see Pod.

 

Arctic Totem, now in the collection of Barbara Esstman, is one the first pieces where I intentionally left some of the carving rough. The glass is Bullseye, and by using different colors I was able to achieve an organic effect.

 

Group Dynamics is a piece that reminds my husband of a Zen garden. I like the simplicity. The white bowl-shapes were intentionally slumped off center, and their position can be shifted.

 

The next three pieces, Flock, Landing, and Solo, are part of my wave series. The waves themselves are formed from glass that, because of its composition, cannot be recycled. By first breaking up the glass, fusing it, then slumping it, I can achieve a shape that feels as if it’s in motion. The length of time in the kiln affects the smoothness of the piece, but there’s also an element of chance. One thing I like about working with glass is that some of what happens is out of your control. The result is many happy accidents.

The kayak and smaller wave forms in the pieces are formed of Bullseye Glass. I like the contrast between the two types of glasses. To me, they reflect the difference between liquid and solid forms.

 

 

Totem is another piece where I explore the idea of contrast, this time in the form of shape (kayak forms on top of a cube) and texture (smooth and rough-carved). I’m especially happy with the jewel tones of the piece.

 

Pod is one of my newest works. It’s also formed of Bullseye Glass, but I’ve been experimenting with the firing sequence to achieve the look of raw minerals. I will have many more works in this style soon, but I wanted to post one of my early efforts. Pod is currently in a display in the old terminal at National Airport, along with several of my other pieces.
